A Nation of Eagles or Turkeys?

Time Magazine’s survey on personal responsibility and community service says 42% of people believe that businesses cannot be trusted to make socially responsible decisions; it’s up to the government to make sure they do. Does this number shock anyone? Almost half your clients, friends and associates don’t trust the people who run their businesses in a ethical way. This is staggering!!!
Since most of the people on my list own their own business I’d like to hear from the ones who I should be trusting. Trust the government to make your decisions for you. This is crazy. Talk about taking no personal responsibility.

Lucky or Prepared?

I spent 20 hours this week in the field doing photography for clients. I have a rule that my camera is always set for my ideal picture and exposure.
I’ve often wondered if its luck or skill that most of my pictures come out the way I expect. I learned long ago that pre-visualization in both photography and life makes a huge difference. Several years ago, I got to sit in on an interview with Jack Nicklaus. He was asked how he could be so consistent over the years. He talked about how he saw every shot before he hit it. He knew that if he could see it in his mind, he could his body to do it.

How many times do we go about our business randomly and get only random results. The next time you pick up the phone, try to visualize the result before it happens. Plan your discussion before you call, go through it in your mind before you pick up the phone. You’ll be surprised how well the call goes. Try it and let me know how you do.

Designing your life

I spent several hours last week in downtown Columbus at night.
We needed several images for a calendar for one of my corporate clients.
I set up my tripod and determined what the right exposure would be for the images.
I used an old technique to make sure I got an image the client would like. I bracketed two full stops on each exposure (a total of five images for each image) and came up with several images the client liked. You can see the image the client chose. I’m glad I didn’t count on the automatic settings to get an image. All of the clients choices came from my bracketed exposures and none chosen using the automatic settings. It’s just a reminder that even with the most advanced cameras you still have to have a creative vision before you take the picture.

It’s the same when designing your life, you have to know what you want it to look like as you start moving in a specific direction. Then all the elements will come together to create the life you want.
