Gifts That Last Forever

Gifts that transcend time and place
My father gave me many gifts over the years. His final Christmas gift to me was a simple poem that he said summed up his life and his personal philosophy. He has been gone for five years and I think how his values and perspectives shaped my life. Near the end he shared many stories and he reminded me its not the things in life that make a difference its the time spent with those who care…

Here is the poem he gave me as a final gift…
Abou Ben Adhem

Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,
And saw, within the moonlight in his room,
Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom,
An angel writing in a book of gold:—
Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,
And to the Presence in the room he said
“What writest thou?”—The vision raised its head,
And with a look made of all sweet accord,
Answered “The names of those who love the Lord.”
“And is mine one?” said Abou. “Nay, not so,”
Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low,
But cheerly still, and said “I pray thee, then,
Write me as one that loves his fellow men.”

The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night
It came again with a great wakening light,
And showed the names whom love of God had blessed,
And lo! Ben Adhem’s name led all the rest.

Merry Christmas from the Columbus Zoo

Merry Christmas from the Columbus Zoo

Beco weighs in at over 1100 pounds. This has been a great year covering Beco and all his friends at the six zoos I’ve visited this year. I’d like to thank all the great people who made this year great. As Artist’s Light begins working with my corporate clients again in the area of business development and strategic planning this blog will still have photos and quotes. I’ve spent the last two years doing photography for many great clients. I can’t thank you enough for the opportunity to capture your lives with my team. Thank you and God Bless. Next year should take me overseas to cover many of these animals in the wild. The good news about teaching is it can take you anywhere and in my case it will offer me opportunities to change the world.
